Cement board is much heavier and harder to work with than drywall but it is almost completely waterproof. In high moisture shower areas such as shower enclosures use cement backer board. 8 mm 5 16 thickness should not be used for walls or ceilings. Drywall joint compounds must not be used directly over cement board unless it is properly sealed.
